Constructed in 1903 on a hill overlooking downtown Bristol, the Edward Washington King house was listed in the National Historical Registry in 1999. It is unique, not only in its unusually elaborate exterior and interior detailing, but in its melding of regionalvernacular forms with the most sophisticated architectural planning of the day. While there are other Queen Anne houses in the city from the same period, none incorporate such energetic details, including the elaborate chimneys, the molded bricks, and the Renaissance Revival rooftop balustrade at the northeast corner, and few exhibit the same massive scale. The site of this historic Queen Anne Victorian home was once the site of Fort Shelby and converted to a residence of E.W. King in 1903.
