About the Tri-Cities Area
The Tri-Cities Area encompasses the following three cities, nestled in the foothills of the southern Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee:
- Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia
- Johnson City, Tennessee
- Kingsport, Tennessee
Within the triangle formed by these three cities are two very small Tennessee towns, Bluff City and Blountville, the county seat of Sullivan County.
Bristol is called the “twin city” due to its location on the Tennessee-Virginia state line. In fact, the state line runs right down the middle of the main street, which is aptly named “State Street”!
Winner of the All-America City Award
In 1999, the Tri-Cities was the first region ever to win the All-America City Award from the National Civic League. It’s an honor to be proud of, considering that 4,000 communities have applied in the award's 50-year history and fewer than 500 have won.
A Size that’s “Just Right”
Bristol, Johnson City, and Kingsport each report a population around 40,000 - 60,000. All told, there are over 600,000 residents in the Tri-Cities metropolitan area, which includes the counties of Carter, Hawkins, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington in Tennessee and the counties of Scott and Washington in Virginia.
The Bristol-Johnson City-Kingsport SMSA (Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area) is our nation’s 106th largest in population and 102nd largest in number of households. Most of us who live here think we’re just about right - not too big, yet not too small.
Convenient for Travel
Bristol, Johnson City, and Kingsport are very conveniently located. Travel is convenient by air from the Tri-Cities Regional Airport or by car. Easy access to Interstate 81 and Interstate 26 put many popular destinations within reach.
Located at the center of Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and West Virginia, the Tri-City area is within a day’s drive of over half of the U.S. population. Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Knoxville, TN, as well as Asheville, Banner Elk, Blowing Rock, Boone, and Linville, NC, are all less than a 2-hour drive. It’s just over 3 hours to Charlotte, and slightly over 4 hours to Atlanta and Nashville. In 6-8 hours you can be in Washington, Memphis, Myrtle Beach or Charleston, SC. New York City is about 600 miles and Orlando, FL, is about 650 miles.
